And welcome to Day 3 of this weeks series of tools and techniques to support you in improving your wellbeing.

I am excited to introduce you to the NLP Technique of Anchoring.

Anchoring is an NLP technique which originated from the work of Ivan Pavlov and was refined by Bandler and Grinder. Its done by pairing a physical touch with a feeling or behaviour which you want to access.

Perhaps you’ve noticed the anchors you experience in your day to day life.

Let me give you an example…You are driving along in your car and a song comes on the radio that takes you right back to that really funny time….and you literally start to smile and you feel how you felt.

That’s an anchor, and you can create an anchor to enable you to access any positive emotional state you wish to access. Pretty powerful right ?

So…maybe you want to access feelings of calm or confidence in certain situations. Or perhaps you want to feel strong or powerful or happy.

An NLP anchor enables you to access this positive emotional state at the precise time you wish to feel calm or confident, or whatever other positive emotional state you have chosen to anchor.

Lets give it a try.

Set yourself up in a room where you will not be disturbed for the next 20 minutes or so.

Now the first thing to do is to decide on the positive emotional state you wish to access –calmness, confidence or strength etc.

The practice run;

Ok great so lets get you to practice accessing this positive emotional state.

Can you remember a time when you were very (calm, confident, strong….). It can be anything you like, as long as it was a specific time when you experienced this positive emotional state.

Go right back to that time …and float into your own body.

Describe how it feels, what you can see, what you can hear…make the feeling as strong as possible.

Well done. So you now know that if you have ever experienced a positive emotional state before, you can access that positive emotional state any time you choose.!

The Process

Identify the positive emotional state you are going to access.

To anchor your positive emotional state we need to pair the emotion with physical touch.

As we go through the Anchoring script, at the very moment when you feel your positive emotional state at its strongest, I want you to multiply it in strength and at the same time press on the knuckle of your left baby finger for 3 to 5 seconds …then release and shake your body down.

You will repeat the full process 6 or 7 times. Between each one, break state by thinking of the smell of coffee 🙂

Lets Anchor

Can you remember a time when you were totally ___________?

Can you remember a specific time?

As you go back to that time now … go right back to that time, float down into your body and see what you saw, hear what you heard, and really feel the feelings of being totally_____________.

Repeat this process 6 to 7 times.

The Test

Smell the coffee !

Now think of this positive emotional state that you want to access…and fire off your anchor by pressing on the left baby knuckle……really breathe in and absorb the positive feeling.

You can top up your anchor at any time by repeating the anchoring process.

You can stack more than one positive emotional state in one place to create a really powerful anchor by repeating the full process for each positive emotional state. This is referred to in NLP as Stacking anchors.
